A "frog skin melon" is a common name for the Piel de Sapo melon, which is named for its rough, greenish-yellow rind that resembles the skin of a toad. It is also known as a Santa Claus melon or Christmas melon. This melon has sweet, white, juicy flesh and is often used in desserts, salads, or paired with ham. 

How to tell if it's ripe: Unlike many melons, it doesn't have a strong aroma when ripe. To check for ripeness, look for a slight softness at the ends and check if the undertone colors in the bumpy skin are more yellow or orange. The skin itself may also have "sugar cracks" which are a sign of maturity.
